Autism is a developmental disability that results from a neurological disorder

affecting social interaction and communication skills. Usually appearing

during the first three years of life–four times more often in boys–autism is the

most common of five disorders that come under the umbrella of Pervasive

Developmental Disorders or Autism Spectrum Disorders.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), PDDs or

ASDs appear in about 1 in 250 births. As many as 1.5 million American

children and adults are believed to have some form of autism, and the rate is

growing at 10-17% per year, according to government statistics.

Several screening instruments have been developed that also may help

diagnose autism, including the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), the

Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (CHAT), the Autism Screening

Questionnaire, and the Screening Test for Autism in Two-Year- Olds.

Dietary changes may help autistic individuals as well, as they may exhibit low

tolerance for certain foods or chemicals. Some research has implicated the

incomplete breakdown of peptides from foods that contain gluten, found in

wheat, oats, and rye, and casein, found in dairy products, which can lead to

disruption in the biochemical and neuroregulatory processes in the brain. An

overgrowth of yeast also may contribute to the behavioral and medical

problems of autistic children, including confusion, hyperactivity, stomach

problems, and fatigue.
